May 20, 2020: Aurora Lions Club members donate to Aurora Chartwell Long Term Care Facility residents and staff.

Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), the charity arm of Lions Club International have donated almost $4 million US as a response to the COVID-19 outbreak. District A-16, which includes an area bordered by Halliburton to Oshawa and Markham to Keswick, has received a $10,000 US Grant for support of Front Line Workers at Long Term Care facilities that have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The Executive of the District have divided this amount into the four Regions. Region 18, which includes Aurora to Stouffville and Markham to Maple, has been making deliveries of food, snacks, fruit and beverages to Front Line Workers at a number of Long Term Care facilities. We appreciate the dedication and efforts of all Front Line and Essential Workers everywhere

The Lions Club First 100 Years

The Lions Club History

The Lions Club is the largest volunteer service organization in the world.  We have over 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries and are 1.35 million members strong.  Lions was started in Chicago by businessman Melvin Jones in 1917 and came to Canada via Windsor in 1920.  In 1950, the Leo program was introduced to include the youth of the world.  We  celebrated one hundred years of service in 2017.

The Aurora Lions Club have been living up to our “we serve” motto in this community for 73 years.  When the club received it’s charter on May 9, 1944, the Lions became the first service club in Aurora.

Since then, we have been going strong.  From the hey-days of the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s to our restructuring in the 2010’s, we continue to serve our community with many different programs and projects.  Some of these include but are not limited to

Vision and Hearing Screening at the SK Level

Christmas Basket Program

Polo For Heart

Big Bike Ride for Heart & Stroke

Used Eyeglasses Program

Dog Guides

Pancake Breakfast in Sheppard`s Bush

Assistance to Local Residents

Every dollar we make is returned to the public.  We strive to support those in our community that are in need as well as other programs in Canada.   Right here in Ontario, we have Lions Camp Kirk (in Kirkfield) for autistic, ADD/ADHD and learning disabled children, CNIB Camp Joe (on Lake Joseph) for the visually impaired , Lions Camp Dorset for those on kidney dialysis and Camp Huronda (Huntsville) for those with Diabetes.   We also make donations to LCIF to be used for disaster relief around the world.  Last year we were able to make significant donations to Fort Mac Murray, Alberta, right here in Canada, when the fires broke out.  This year Minden received a grant to help combat the flooding.

As they say, where there’s a need, there’s a Lions.  We Serve.

Lions Clubs Code of Ethics

  • To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

  • To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.

  • To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

  • Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

  • To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

  • Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.

  • To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy

  • To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
